Vanessa Of course, it seems that consumers are increasingly asking questions like yours about this and another very relevant moment: the social justice movement. This group is very white, reflecting failures and industry realities. LVMH has just announced a new Fendi women’s clothing designer, Kim Joneswho is incredibly talented but is another white man. Antoine, have you thought about the issue of diversity of choice?
Antoine If frankly, for this particular nomination, no. We decide these things in advance. This theme of diversity, this theme of inclusion, has been at the forefront of our priorities, but it will not be resolved by taking immediate action to appoint a new Black designer. We’ve published our ethnic data in the United States, and when you look at the results, it’s actually pretty good when it comes to representing different races. This is not allowed in France. But a lot of work awaits. White is not a member of our board. Very, very much hope this will change in the near future.
Virgil Fashion is our occupation, but it also projects the image you see when driving down Houston Street or driving to the airport looking at ads. We have the opportunity to change. This needs to be addressed, for example, at 12 different points – at the level of education, but also at how we steer our lens towards value and what contributes.
Antoine One of the few positive outcomes of this pandemic is that we will work much more with local communities. Earlier, when we were preparing for the show in LA, we brought everyone from Paris – 60 or 70 models, hair, makeup, all. When you open any magazine, you see that it’s always the same three photographers, the same hair and makeup. From now on, for most of these brands, events or shootings, we decided to work with local talent. It will help us get out of this little mafia when we are always working with the same people. I think it will end this pandemic.
Virgil Now the epicenter is on the outskirts. And I would say that the land is now the future – creation comes from non-traditional places. Africa can be the new Berlin or the new Paris. That’s where we’ll see industry gains.
