Over the past two years, smart phone and tablet chips have not been on par with laptops – mobile intelligence and video cores are now responsible for the vast collection and processing of user data at the edge of the network. Today MediaTek Announces its latest high-end mobile 5G system, the Dimensity 1200, with a strong focus on “exemplary AI multimedia” features, along with the Dimensity 1100, a smaller step from 2019. 1000 dimension. The new chips are significant for technical decision makers as they raise the performance bar for affordable Android devices, including some of the world’s most popular brand models.
Although Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 and Apple A14 Bionic are the most powerful mobile application processors, in fact MediaTek smartphone chips surpassed Qualcomm’s last quarter, thanks to a greater focus on mid-level proposals. The Dimensity 1200 partly plays on the success of competing sample chips. It boasts a five-core video signal processor that can capture up to 200 megapixel photos and progressive-sensor HDR video, as well as an upgraded six-core APU 3.0 AI processor with 12.5% higher performance than its predecessor. By comparison, the Dimensity 1100 is limited to 108 megapixel photos and uses a slower previous-generation APU 3.0 AI processor.
The new processors combine machine learning to create night panoramas and multi-person bokeh images, as well as artificial intelligence-based zooming of standard color video in HDR – just a few examples of real-time data analysis that would not have been possible. with previous generation AI chips. MediaTek includes an enhanced multi-tasking planning tool that improves the energy efficiency and latency of artificial intelligence cores. The Dimensity 1200 also supports an ultra-high screen refresh rate of 168Hz to 144Hz, with the Dimensity 1100 at FHD + resolution, while both promise the same 90Hz at higher QHD + resolutions.
Each chip features a nine-core ARM G77 GPU with eight cores on competing platforms, and some key beam tracking features for games and applications. In addition to the synthetic Manhattan 3.0 benchmarks, speeds of 130 frames per second and 120 frames per second, respectively, MediaTek claims that the chips have enough horsepower to run the Playerunknown battlefields at 90 frames per second on the Dimensity 1200, and HDR enabled at 60 frames per second – Dimensity 1100.
Both chips have eight processor cores, but in different arrays: Dimensity 1200 wires with a single 3.0 GHz ARM Cortex-A78 core – at least clock speed faster than the 2.84 GHz Cortex-X1 Snapdragon 888, promising 22% CPU performance. via Dimensity 1000 – with the option to return to three 2.6 GHz A78 and four 2.0 GHz A55 cores. The 1100 chip skips the 3GHz core and has four 2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 and four 2 GHz A55 instead.
Because the chip manufacturer TSMC’s 5-nanometer production lines are fully ordered, the Dimensity 1200 and 1100 are built according to a 6-nanometer process. This reduces the size of their transistor compared to 7 nanometers dimension 1000, however, it lags behind the state-of-the-art 5-nanometer process that the Snapdragon 888 and Apple A14 Bionic use to further reduce and improve energy efficiency.
In wireless, the new Dimensity chips use MediaTek’s previous generation 5G modem, which supports frequencies up to 6 GHz but not millimeter waves, which is a limitation over Snapdragon-based solutions. They are also limited to Wi-Fi 6 at times faster Wi-Fi 6E routers are starting to become available. However, both chips support the latest version of Bluetooth, known as Bluetooth 5.2, promising to improve energy consumption and data delays.
The Dimensity 1200 and 1100 will be available on Android devices by 2021. March. While system chip solutions will focus on phones and tablets, MediaTek hints that it will have additional news related to 5G industrial IoT, telematics, 5G broadband, and traditional PCs in the not-too-distant future.
