MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra held a great start after beating Meralco (105-91) at the Angela University PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday.
The Gin Kings improved to 3-0 and leveled TNT and Rain or Shine at the top of the tournament, while the Bolts dropped to 1-2.
After the first half, the 20:20 draw, the Gin Kings used a strong second half to make a big difference to the rest of the match.
Ginebra ran 14-3 and in the first half, with a lead of 3:58, they led Jeff Khan to 42-31.
“I just thought it was a huge defensive effort for our evening, and we did a good job of defending their choice,” said Ginebra head coach Tim Cone. “We haven’t gotten much crashes and we can stay in the game.”
“We hung hard mentally and played a lot better.”
Ginebra eventually climbed as high as 24, 92-68, from another Chan’s pitch.
Iapetus Aguilar scored 20 points and rebounded four balls to lead the Gin Kings, while Stanley Pringle added 16 points and seven boards.
For Allein Maliksi and Reynel Hugnatan, the Bolts scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.
