Final Fantasy has been a leader in the role-playing space since its debut in 1987. In recent years, the franchise has been a success with MMOs Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy VII remake. But the last numbered entry in the series Final Fantasy XV, came out back in 2016.
This new game seems to continue the franchise trend away from a turn-based fight to action in real time. It also has a more medieval aesthetic, unlike the fiction of recently created Final Fantasy games such as Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XIII. It also seems to be focused on managing one character rather than a heroic party.
While many franchise games are released on multiple platforms, and the series began its life as a Nintendo exclusive, Final Fantasy has strong ties to the PlayStation. Many of the most memorable games, including Final Fantasy VII, started out as PlayStation titles. Final Fantasy VII Remake is exclusive to PlayStation 4.
Square Enix just said the FFXVI will be an exclusive PlayStation console, so it could still show up on a personal computer. It could also still be available on PlayStation 4. But it won’t be a Switch or Xbox.
Naoki Yoshida, the man who saved Final Fantasy XIV, is the producer of this new game. Directed by Hiroshi Takai. He previously directed The Last Remnant.
